Heavy showers on the way

The Meteorology Department revealed today that heavy showers or thunderstorms could be expected in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Uva and Southern provinces during the next few days, especially between 22nd and 24th January. This is due to the wave type disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, rains more than 100 mm can be expected in other parts of the country as well, especially after 2.00 pm. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers, added the department. The Department reported that there were fairly heavy showers in Polonnaruwa and Matale districts while moderate showers in Kurunegala as well as Central, Uva and Eastern provinces. The statistics were observed during the 24 hour-period ending at 8.30 am today (21st January) morning. The highest rainfall was 62.5mm, and was reported at Aralaganwila.
