There is no right for parliamentarians to take the 100,000 allowance if the Rs.100 given to senior citizens is cut back, Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, Ranjan Ramanayake has stated, local media reports.
Speaking to the media this week, he said that many parliamentarians were extremely well off, and therefore they had no need for an allowance of Rs. 100,000.
Acceding that there were some new parliamentarians from under privileged backgrounds for whom the money would be important, he said that he had no objection to them receiving that allowance.
The Deputy Minister’s statements come several days after his announcement in a message on his Facebook page, that he himself will not be accepting the allowance of Rs. 100,000 for Parliamentarians.
